Bill Sloan, born in Chicago and raised in Libertyville, Illinois has always loved art. His family (a combination of Scott-Irish and Italian) is filled with artists, including his cousin, Joan Mitchell, the world’s foremost female Abstract Expressionist. The family influence of the early years was later reinforced by formal study at the University of Colorado and with other Masters.
His style of work emphasizes freedom of hand. His paintings are predominantly of people, street scenes and landscapes. He enjoys the imperfect and semi-accidental effects caused by loosely laying down the image in two colors without use of any mechanical aids. His work has expanded over time, from contemporary impressionist to include a looser interpretation of light and color, while still maintaining the underlying context of recognizable objects. Bill’s works range in size from small to very large. Like most artists, much of his work reflects some part of his own journey through life.
From 1980 to 1990, Bill choose Southern California as his base, while traveling to exotic locales for added inspiration. In 1991, to support his Mother’s failing health, he moved to Florida and established a Studio in Palm Beach, where he painted for seven years. During that period, his paintings were exhibited in various galleries on Worth Avenue and in South Beach. After his Mother passed on, Bill choose to return to Southern California, to continue his career. Multiple large commissions by corporations, such as Inflight Duty Corp., in New York and The MacLeod Partnership, in Los Angeles were executed during this period. Bill also began experimenting in digital computer art, resulting in the pieces seen in Gallery 5. Bill’s paintings have been shown at the Aspen Museum of Fine Art and the Norton Museum in Palm Beach.
In 2009, Bill’s love of the exotic in life prompted him to relocate to the charming, old, colonial town of Antigua, Guatemala, where he established a small Studio. His work is currently being shown in Guatemala by the “Yo Soy” Gallery in the Galleria de Merced in Antigua. In 2010, Bill decided to explore more of Central and South America. He took his paints and headed south on a 1991 Honda 250 he bought in Antigua for $1500, travelling through seven countries ending in Cartagena, Colombia, where he produced the "Hotel Bella Vista" Series. In Early February, Bill returned to Los Angeles, where he currently paints and lives in an Artist Loft in Koreatown. His next adventure awaits....
